So, we end the year 2009 with the country still seemingly in a mess!
We are still at war in Afghanistan and bent on escalating it with the addition of a lot more troops. We have expanded our “secret” war in Pakistan while also now taking more than a closer look at Yemen and even Somalia. And, of course, we still are in Iraq!
The unemployment rate is still really ,really high–even if the pace of actual job loss has slackened somewhat in recent months.
More and more people face foreclosure of their homes.
More and more people are now on food stamps.
Commercial flying has become an even bigger pain ( I know…who’d have thought that possible?).
And, the government has, once again, proven itself incapable of actually doing anything in a smart fashion–witness the debacle of the botched terrorist attack on that Delta/Northwest jet over Detroit Christmas Day. Various government agencies, including the CIA, had enough information they could have–should have–connected the dots which is, after all, what they get paid to do! Instead , they did what they always seem to do…drop the ball.
The government is apparently even going after some bloggers who managed to break some news—with leaked information on government plans to beef up security on commercial planes as well as in and around the nation’s airports. Wouldn’t the government spend its time more effectively going after the actual would-be terrorists?
In a few, short hours, it will be 2010 and we have another full year ahead to watch in amazement as more officials screw up and as President Obama continues to party and play in Hawaii!
