It may as well be official–just about no homeowner is making it through the mortgage loan modification program.
The Treasury Department, as reported by USA Today, reports that only about 4% (yes, that’s FOUR percent!) ” of homeowners whose home loans were reworked through a government-led program have successfully completed a trial period required to get permanent modifications.”
Now, banks claim that this is because, in large measure, homeowners going through the program are failing to produce the needed paperwork in time. But critics have long charged that the paperwork ,itself, is confusing, and that many homeowners simply do not understand what they are reading or agreeing to.
Then there have been stories in the press of banks and other mortgage lenders that somehow manage to keep misplacing the completed paperwork when a homeownner actually does manage to turn the documents in on time.
Clearly, this is not a program that is working or that ever will work and something needs to be done to make drastic changes or the foreclosure rate will skyrocket in the months ahead.

5There’s good news, and bad news.
The banks are definitely not making it any easier for homeowners to get a loan modification, that’s for sure. It seems like they are always misplacing paperwork, ignoring your calls (you can’t seem to get the same person on the line -ever) and making the loan modification package really difficult to navigate and complete. This is the bad news.
The good news, is that it IS possible to get your loan modified - My husband and I were months and months behind on our mortgage; we put together our loan modification package with the help of a non-profit organization that helps you for free. We just didn’t have the money to even explore using a loan modification company - and unfortunately, most of them will only take your $3,000 and run off with it.
In the end, we were able to get our monthly payment permanently dropped by over $1,000 per month (although we did have our loan extended by ten years, but to keep our house, it was so worth it).
You CAN modify your mortgage on your own and for FREE, provided you have the time and patience to do so. It’s not really all that hard to put the package together - it’s just that you do need to gather up all of the documents, put together your hardship letter and know the correct place to send your package.
Bottom line - you CAN modify your loan on your own if you’re willing to put in the work. If you’re putting together your package on your own, you need to make sure you have all of your documents ready:
- A list of all of your household expenses (utilities, credit cards, personal expenses, groceries, etc.) - try going through your bank statement to help determine your expenses
- Proof of income (pay stubs or bank account statements for the self-employed)
- Previous year’s tax returns and a completed 4506-T
- Hardship letter (letter detailing why you’ve fallen behind in your mortgage and asking the bank for a loan modification)
If you’re thinking of putting together your own loan modification package, YOU CAN DO IT! If you want a sample free hardship letter or to learn more about the non-profit group that helped us, see the link below.

8A lot of companies try to get people by writing work using complicated technical jargon and there’s not a lot people can do as legally the banks are allowed to get away with it. if there is money to be lost then companies even under a government scheme will not make it easy to enforce and by misplacing documents and failing application due to small problems that is not new, it happens a lot in insurance claims and those companies have large teams of people to find any in correction on your application to deny your claim.
