What is good for GM is clearly no longer good for the country…as was once the unofficial motto of the auto giant…now that it has entered into bankruptcy.
Taxpayers—you and me—now pretty much own GM–along with all of its problems.
The biggest problem it has still is—it make cars that more and more Americans do not want to buy!
By effectively nationalizing GM, the question now is whether the government can mandate that GM build cars that are more competitive with European, Japanese and even Korean ones.
Yet, the Obama administration insists it doesn’t want to be in the auto building business and has no intention of running things day to day…that is for the “experts” to do.
But aren’t these the “experts” that caused the problem to begin with? Even if the old GM executives are replaced with new blood from elsewhere in the auto industry, like minds tend to think and act alike.
Seems to me that once the government makes the decision to buy some 60 percent of General Motors, like it or not, it is in the auto production and even marketing business.
Time to start acting that way.

1I know 5 and 10 years ago GM has made some lousy cars, but the newer ones are great. I current own a 2008 Chevy Impala and I love it! Eve the new Malibus are great.
If GM didn’t allow franchises so close together they would not have been competing against each other. This downsizing will work (I hope) eventually. I’m not so sure the over-paid union worker helped the matter too much as well.

2I agree with above. I’m a baby boomer who learned from my parents that american cars were not very well made. I drove honda’s and toyota’s for years and had no problem with those reliable well made cars but as I have searched for my last two cars — i mean really researched with an open mind — I found that GM made the best vehicles in the categories I was looking for. When I say best, I mean best mileage, safety ratings and quality with a better warranty than any of the japanese or the germans. Like I said, nothing against the japanese cars, they are fine, but I now own a Buick Enclave and a Chevy Avalanche and the truth is they are just better cars in almost every way.
