Who needs sci-fi flicks like The Day The Earth Stood Still when we are living through an actual, ever expanding global crisis. Only this one is of our own making and we can’t point the finger of blame at any extraterrestrials, bless their green skinned frames.
As one Reuters article points out, 2008 will be noted for having one of the biggest stock market falls on record–though the biggest yearly drop still was back in 1931 during the Great Depression. Which reminds me…not to be difficult….but why do we call it the GREAT Depression? Nothing great about it unless you happened to have been one of those lucky enough to have made a killing during those years….and, make no mistake about it…some did.
If you stop and look back at this previous year, it is pretty amazing when you think about it: how what began as a mortgage crisis involving relatively few homeowners in the U.S., is now a world-wide credit crisis fueling a deepening recession in this country and in parts of Europe and Asia as well.
Hard to find an industry left untouched….cars, travel, manufacturing, financial, the list goes on and on.
Come to think of it…maybe we should welcome some alien who can make the Earth stand still for just one day…then we can better see the mess we have brought upon ourselves.
