As a candidate, Barack Obama, to some, could do no wrong. But as President-elect, he has backed away from some issues near and dear to his core of early supporters and has now angered California’s gay and liberal groups by his selection of evangelical pastor Rick Warren to give the invocation in Washington.

obamaWarren and his church backed a controversial proposition that defined marriage in California as only being between a man and woman–the proposition effectively re-wrote the state’s constitution.

While Obama likes to say that he is open minded to just about every point of view, it is one thing to be open minded and another to spit in someone’s face, which is how many of these groups now feel.

The fact that Obama feels a need to cater to the fringe right–though Warren is probably a little less fringe than some others–is a disappointing development. It was expected he would try to govern from the center, but he seems to want to govern a bit more now from the right.
