Did John McCain win the first presidential debate with Barack Obama because of Sen. Edward Kennedy?
Although Kennedy, a Democrat, gave a powerful endorsement of Obama’s candidacy, Republican McCain’s seemingly heartfelt words of prayer for Kennedy who had been rushed earlier to a hospital with a seziure, underlines a key difference between McCain and Obama: Although Obama’s rhetoric can soar when giving speeches, it is McCain who comes across as being the more human of the two.
One can argue that people should award points in the debate based on policy statements, but the truth is, Americans make many decisions at the gut level.
It seemed to me that McCain basically set the pace for the debate–forcing Obama to consistently agree that McCain was, in fact, correct about something.
For a host of reasons, Obama may, in fact, make a far better President of the United States; but McCain makes a far better human!

1I suppose the question is whether we want someone who is only “human,” someone who could be our drinking buddy, or whether we’re in need of someone who’s a little more capable, someone who isn’t just your average guy.
