So much for so-called “political experts.” No one saw this coming. No one thought that Republican John McCain, who turned 72 today, would select the 44 year old brand new governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, to be his vice-presidential running mate.
But good for him! Barack Obama blew it when he by-passed Hillary Clinton to be on his ticket, without doubt because his ego was in the way, so a GOP ticket with a female on it does steal some of Sen. Obama’s thunder.
Not much is known about Palin, but you can be certain a small army of reporters and producers is on its way this very minute to Alaska in search of any dirt they can dig up about this self-described “hockey mom.”
Great timing
You have to hand one to the Republicans for their sense of timing.
Obama has received mostly praise for his acceptance speech in Denver last night. Normally, he would bask in the glow of the accolades at least through the long Labor Day weekend.
But the news less than 24 hours after Obama’s speech of his life-time was mostly centered on McCain’s historic selection for his ticket.
Who would have thought even a year or so ago that we would end up with a Democratic ticket headed by an African-American and a Republican ticket boasting someone who could become this nation’s first female vice-president?
Talk about an awesome race!

1The Palin pick does a few things.
1. Changes the dialogue of the race. The second she was announced, Obama and the Democratic convention disappeared from the news.
2. Highlights Obama’s inexperience. The democrats and left leaning blogs/papers/publications keep picking on Palin’s experience. The problem is that Obama has no more international experience himself other than his much touted trip to Europe. The Dems attack her on experience at their peril.
3. Throws everyone for a loop. The press, Republicans, Democrats, and everyone else did not expect this pick. It has brought renewed excitement to the politics of the Right.
4. Enhanced the Maverick label of McCain and made the Republican candidates into the true candidates of change. Who is going to bring change to the White House?
The Dems are mocking the pick, but they should be careful.
