The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming; The Russians Are Here!

They’re baaaaaaaaaack! The Russians that is. The bi-polar world that became a uni-polar world with the demise of the Soviet Union is back to a bi-polar one—tri, if you want to factor in China, though it doesn’t seem as expansionist as the “new” Russia appears to be.
The situation in Georgia is dire and it is unclear, according to various experts, exactly what the intentions of the Russians are at this point since Georgia already withdrew its own troops from the South Ossetia region.
In a nutshell–this region declared independence from Georgia years ago after the fall of the Soviet Union. But that independence has not been recognized by either Georgia or the international community.
The Russians, however, have busily gone about distributing Russian passports to many in the region making them de facto if not de jure Russian citizens.
While, as to be expected, much remains unclear, the trigger to this conflict seems to be Georgia sending in troops to try and take South Ossestia back –though Georgia claims its troops were first attacked by separatists. See what I mean about facts being in conflict here?
More at stake
The real problem is, Georgia is a US ally and provides troops in Iraq. Georgia expected American backing when the Russians invaded. All it got was diplomatic wrist slapping.
Nor is it likely the U.S. will get involved in this–from a military standpoint–because the U.S. still needs Russia’s help with the Iranian nuclear situation.
But this is the first time since the Soviets invaded Afghanistan that the Russians have been this aggressive.
Clearly, Russia is flexing its muscles and trying to make the point that , when it comes to the world stage, it is, once again, a major player!
