ABC News & The Case Of The “Iraqi” Anthrax: Network Must Come Clean!

As America was reeling from the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, some notable Americans starting getting anthrax laced letters in the mail. It now appears as if a government scientist who apparently killed himself last week as the feds were reportedly moving in, may have been responsible for the attacks.
But that is not the way ABC News reported this important story back in 2001.
In a series of reports by its investigative team, ABC News quoted “sources” who linked the anthrax attacks directly to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq–this at a time when, we now know, the Bush administration was already looking for an excuse–any excuse–to invade Iraq even though it had nothing to do with the 9/11 terrorists.
But if the public has a short attention span in this age of nanosecond news bits, there are some whose memory is keeping this story alive and who are now asking questions–questions of ABC News: Who were the sources? Were they within the same government facility that is now believed to be where the anthrax was produced? Who manipulated ABC News and for what purpose?
ABC Must Come Clean
This current round of inquiry appears to have its roots in a posting by Salon’s Glenn Greenwald who is one of those reporters with a long memory.
His questions resonated with blogster Jay Rosen of PressThink and others.
They are all right in demanding answers from ABC News.
It is pointed out that “sources” who lie to reporters loose their cloak of anonymity, and should free ABC to tell the public what it knows.
After all, ABC’s reporting may have played a huge role in rallying Americans behind the president’s invasion of Iraq–an invasion that has led to a protracted war in which more than four thousand U.S. soldiers have already lost their lives, with thousands more seriously injured.
ABC News has blood on its hands and needs to wash them clean.
