Barack Obama’s Mile High Party-At A Football Stadium!

Guess this is what Barack Obama meant by change–he says he will accept the Democratic party’s presidential nomination at a football stadium in Denver instead of at the convention center where the convention will actually take place.
Obama’s rationale is that more people can fit into Invesco Field (about 75 thousand) than in the 21 thousand seat Pepsi Center.
Says Obama, “Sometimes our conventions don’t feel like they are open to everybody. For us to be able to do it in Invesco Field is an opportunity for 80,000 people who might otherwise not have been able to participate to get involved.”
Well, first of all, everyone is not supposed to be involved. This is not a general election victory speech..it is a speech thanking delegates for selecting him at the convention center.
Then, there is the cost. Yes, the party can do what it wants with its money–as can Obama now that he is not taking public financing–but is this what those who contributed to Obama’s campaign meant their money for?
Echo of JFK
Press reports point out that the only other time something like this happened was back in 1960 when John F. Kennedy gave his speech at the Los Angeles Coliseum. So, clearly, the Obama folks are going for the Kennedy tie-in as best they can.
But this only puts the spotlight back on the cult-like following Obama has–a following that is dangerous by its very nature. He is a presidential candidate, not a Rolling Stone!
