I hope this is NOT what Barack Obama meant by “change”—He is reportedly considering former top military leaders, says the Associated Press, as possible running mates!
The reasoning is that having a former general on the ticket would shore up Obama’s weaknesses on both the military and foreign affairs fronts.
But this is also insane.
While this country certainly has had its fair share of military men being elected President (after all, Washington was a general before he was our first prez) this is not the time to choose one.
Nothing wrong with military folks, mind you. But, let’s face it, they have a different outlook on the world than elected officials have.
Sure, John McCain was a military guy once when he was young…but, he was young and not a general.
The price of inexperience
I doubt Obama would be dumb enough to actually pick a former general to be vice-president, but even the news that he is considering doing that is problematic.
Hillary Clinton argued she was ready to be commander in chief of the armed forces. Obama seems to be indicating that he is not and so must turn to the military to find someone who is.
Not a god start, Barack.

2Others are expected to be tried in a military court system created during the Bush administration, which Obama is altering to give the detainees more legal rights.
