Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse at U.S. airlines, comes word that things have gotten worse at U.S. airlines.

Seems they are actually flying their airplanes slower to save fuel costs!

So much for the “jet age.”–According to an Associated Press report, many major and not so major airlines are slowing their planes down in the sky to save costs.

The A.P. says Southwest started flying slower a few months back, which is expected to save the budget airline something like $42 million in fuel costs by the end of 2008.

United, says A.P., is spending what little money it has left on flight planning software that will help its pilots figure out what speed to fly the plane that costs the least amount of money.

In some cases, flying slower means shifting down from 542 miles per hour to about 532 mph which adds minutes to the planned flight time.

Isn’t the whole idea about flying to get to where you want to go as quickly as possible?
