American Airlines Cancels More Than 1,000 Flights; 100 Thousand Stranded!

It may get worse before it gets better. That’s pretty much what American Airlines is saying as it has left more than 100,000 passengers trying to figure out how to get to where they are going  now that the airline has cancelled more than 1,000 of its flights using MD-80 jetliners.

A spokesman for the airline tells the Associated Press that of the 300 some odd aircraft American is being forced to inspect by the Federal Aviation Administration, only 30 had been returned to service by this morning (Wednesday). He says the cancellations could go one past today!   No kidding!!!!!!

American is trying to spin this as it is doing all it can to make sure its passengers are safe. But, if that were really the case, the airline would have done the inspections required in the first place and done them correctly. It didn’t.

The One Third Solution?

In order to make things right with the FAA, American had to cancel more than one third of its domestic schedule.

The MD-80–a twin jet that is a close cousin of the old DC-9–is used by American mostly at Dallas and Chicago—-138 flights at O’Hare alone were cancelled Wednesday morning.

The inspections involve the bundling of wires in the wheel well of the aircrafts involved–a spot inspection by the FAA showed that many of the planes violated regulations.

Airlines have been getting away with near murder for years

As recent revelations have shown, U.S. airlines have been getting away with non compliance for years, as the FAA has all but ignored safety issues that could cause massive delays as airlines try to fix the problem.

The government started to go after all airlines recently only after it was disclosed that Southwest Airlines had not followed strict FAA procedures on certain mandated inspections. The FAA has since been checking to see what the situation is with all airlines based in the United States.
