hestonWhen most people today think of Charlton Heston, the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. probably don’t come instantly to mind for many. But, the fact of the matter is, Heston, who died Saturday at 84, was closer to the “movement” than someone such as Barack Obama ever was and probably ever will be.

In later years, Heston came to known for his support of conservative causes, Ronald Reagan, and guns–he was head of the National Rifle Association for many years.

But, Heston was apparently a far more complex character off screen than he has been given credit for by many who prefer to stereotype.

Strong advocate for civil rights

In the 1960s, when being an advocate for civil rights in this country was a risky move at best, Heston not only took part in marches, but helped raise money for Martin Luther King Jr. And, like his long time pal Ronald Reagan, Heston was president of the Screen Actors Guild.

Interesting guy. And, he knew God on a first name basis to boot!
