The Obama-Richardson Vice-Presidential Deal: The Betrayal Of Hillary Clinton

richardsonNew Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is as low as they come, which means, he’s an awesome politician. A scum bag, yes, but an awesome politician. Here’s why:

Had it not been for Bill Clinton, the chunky Richardson would not be governor of New Mexico. In fact, he wouldn’t be anybody period!

But, the former president plucked Richardson from obscurity and made him the man (low life?) he is today.

Hillary thought Richardson was a “slam dunk”But, it was Hillary who got dunked when the now bearded Richardson endorsed Barack Obama to be the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

And, he did more than that. A lot more: He made sure in his speech to not only praise Obama, which sort of makes sense if you are endorsing the guy, but to take cheap shots at Clinton, all but calling upon her to give up and unite behind Obama. You know that they say about–with friends like that, who needs enemies?

What happened?

I think it is obvious to all but the most nearsighted that Richardson and Obama cut a deal. And, what could that deal be? What else: That Obama will select Richardson to be his vice-presidential running mate.

It makes perfect sense and explains in large measure why Richardson seemingly turned hostile to his old pal, Hillary.

My educated guess is that Richardson, who, of course, wanted very much to be President but was forced out of the race, decided that his best path to power leads right to the Vice-Presidential office.

Without doubt, Richardson must have expressed these wishes to Clinton, fully expecting a secret nod of approval.

hillaryBut, Clinton has done so well among Latino voters around the country, she doesn’t really need Richardson, himself a Latino, to balance her ticket and attract the ever increasing Hispanic vote. She wanted to keep her options open, of course.

Obama, on the other hand, has not faired well among Latino voters and their support, or non-support, could mean victory or defeat against John McCain in November, should he become the Democrats’ choice.

For Obama, then, it was vital to tap into Richardson’s strong base of support and, I am certain, offer him the promise of being anointed his running mate in very short order.

Playing one against the other

obama picAccording to published reports, Richardson had informed Obama’s people weeks ago that he had all but made up his mind to endorse Obama, but he kept it his little secret.

But, rather than coming out and saying that right away, the ass-hole let Hillary twist slowly in the wind while he pretended to not have made up his mind about whom to support.

Shame on him! Doing that to a “friend.”

That’s the “deal” made behind closed doors by the candidate who likes to boast how he is a new politician who is all about “change.”

I recall wondering what there was about Bill Richardson to cause Clinton to lift him up by his underwear. Richardson is not bright enough to hide his duplicity and childish reach to be somebody. I hate to give anything to Obama but I think he is too smart to do anything binding with Richardson unless it is perhaps put him in the Cabinet as a foreigh affairs advisor. Barf.
