After presiding over the political firing of several U.S. Attorneys who wouldn’t do the administration’s bidding, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has fired himself.
The nation’s first Hispanic attorney general helped implement the President’s policy of sending terrorism suspects to Cuba to be “questioned”–He also gave Bush his seal of approval to spirit people off to secret prison camps in Eastern Europe set up by the CIA .
Gonzales is a very close friend of Bush–which is the main reason he got as far as he did in the administration. Competence certainly was not a yardstick used.
The Bush was clearly upset . Only a week ago, he lost his brain when Karl Rove split. Now, he is, in effect, losing his external back-up drive, so to speak.
Bush said of his pal : “After months of unfair treatment that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department, Judge Gonzales decided to submit his resignation and I have accepted his decision.” Not clear yet who actually wrote the President’s comments .
