Just how dangerous to the very fabric of American democracy is Alberto Gonzales, the current Attorney General? Pretty damn dangerous!

James Vicini, in a Reuters dispatch, says current and former Justice Department officials say that “not since the Watergate scandal more than 30 years ago has the U.S. Justice Department been as politicized.”

It is Gonzales who tried to stampede an ailing John Ashcroft to rubber stamp a Bush administration subversion of the Constitution by blessing illegal and warrantless wiretaps of American citizens….

It is Gonzales who ,according to the testimony of numerous people before Congressional committees, repeatedly lied ,under oath, to protect his puppet-masters in the White House when his job should be to protect the civil rights of all Americans…

It is Gonzales who has made a mockery of the concept of impartial justice by presiding over a “Justice” Department where seasoned prosecutors are fired because they failed to tow the White House line and where experienced attorneys were grilled by an inexperienced political hack as a test of whether they had what it takes (for the current administration that is) to be hired on…

It is Gonzales who has time and time again justified and endorsed the concepts of enemy combatants, illegally holding people for long periods of time without judicial review or the benefit of legal assistance, torture as a way to get “confessions” for use at military trials…..the list goes on.

But it makes sense…doesn’t it?  Gonzales is the most dangerous Attorney General since the Watergate years—some may argue correctly, more so!-but he does, after all, represent ,perhaps, the most dangerous administration to have occupied the White House—-ever!

That should make us all sleep well at night.
