What a hornets nest.

On the one hand, I am glad the post about Hurricane Dean and President Bush provoked discussion, controversy and some anger. Good for you folks. You’ve proven you are not total television couch potatoes.

My compliments, however, end there.

Interesting how only one (that’s right, 1, as in “one,” “numero uno,” 1 less than 2 got it?) respondent–and apparently the only one not part of an orchestrated response to the blog posting–took note of the fact that the Is Hurricane Dean God’s Wrath for President Bush? article is a long awaited response to the foolishness of the remarks made by Jerry Falwell and endorsed by Pat Robertson that America deserved 9/11 because some segments of society (you can guess which ones according to Falwell and Robertson) had encouraged God’s wrath.

According to transcripts…just days after 9/11, Falwell, appearing on Robertson’s alleged religious TV show, said, “What we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be minuscule if, in fact, God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give up probably what we deserve.” To which Robertson replied : “Well, Jerry, that’s my feeling…” Falwell continued :” The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this (9/11). And, I know I’ll hear from them for this, but throwing God….successfully with the help of the federal court system…throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this (9/11 again!) because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad…I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for The American Way…all of them who try to secularize America…I point the thing in their face and say, YOU helped this happen (9/11 again!). ” To which Pat Robertson responded, “I totally concur…”

Now, it is certainly true that there were many critics of these twin idiots, but not nearly enough. So, it is interesting how “outraged” some can apparently become when the shoe is on the other foot.

Of course Hurricane Dean is NOT God’s wrath for George W.–and, needless to say, of course no one in Texas or anywhere else deserves a large hurricane.

The difference here is–I was pointing out the idiocy of such statements, often made by the pseudo religious right–while Falwell, Robertson and those who either endorsed their comments or failed to condemn them–actually believe them. And,I’m afraid, still do!
